THE HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF CALL
Hello again, everyone! Today I want to talk about Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL).
So, what is CALL? Computer Assisted Language Learning is the general term for the range of processes and activities that employ computers in the teaching and learning of a new language. For more info click here.Computers firstly were being used in wars but with the innovations in education, there was a need for time saving and creative materials in language teaching. So this is how CALL is developed. Its history is divided into three phases:
- Behaviouristic CALL
- Communicative CALL
- Integrative CALL
In Behavioristic CALL computers were used to be a stimulus for learners' responses. Fill in the blank activities were commonly used. Communicative CALL, on the other hand, provides a communicative environment to make students use the actual language. Lastly, Integrative Phase supports the idea that both general language knowledge and communication should take place in language learning.
So, like everything language learning has changed a lot, right? What do you think of these phases of CALL and how a language class should look like? please comment below!
